Killer Fungi in Dishwashers….

Monday, July 18th, 2011

Have you looked at your dishwasher lately?

Alarmingly, the seals, corners and sides of dishwashers can habour dangerous germs and fungi.  The moist and warm environment of a dishwasher can be ideal conditions for fungi that is heat tolerant.

This obviously can happen at home, but is more likely to be happening in the workplace with communal dishwashers.  In dishwashers that contained this ‘dangerous to humans’ black yeast, it was found to be transferred to dishes and cutlery that had been inside.

The fungi, Exophiala dermatitidis is found in healthy people but it has also been found in the lungs of people suffering from cystic fibrosis and can sometimes cause fatal infections in healthy people.

It is uncertain how the black fungi gets into the lungs, but it is the same as the fungi found in and around dirty rubber seals and corners of dishwashers.

We need to take better care of our dishwashers, and a typical cleaning regime for an office dishwashing machine should be:

  • a daily or weekly wipe down of the insides of the dishwasher with anti-bac including the sides and seals
  • remove food, spills or stains as soon as they are seen
  • a weekly empty wash cycle run
  • a monthly dishwasher specialist cleaner run

We pay particular attention to our clients dishwashers, not just to ensure their longevity but also to prevent the build up and occurance of harmful germs and fungi.

Ensure your crockery and cutlery aren’t poisoning you!

Water Management in 2012

Tuesday, May 31st, 2011

As a company who uses water, it is important to be prepared for the European Commission’s (EC) directive on water management in 2012.

Companies will be expected to save water in all areas under the new directive and businesses need to start to look at water saving initiatives now.

So how can Shipshape help?

We can offer our client’s water saving inititives in the washroom area.  Introducing water-management systems can provide water savings of up to 90%.

One option that we can offer is water-saving systems that can reduce water wastage by uncontrolled urinal flushing.  The systems will also reduce limescale in the urinals and blockages, saving too on maintanence and plumbing call-outs.

Window Cleaning for a Clear Outlook

Monday, March 21st, 2011

If you have a good view out your office window, why obstruct it?

Window cleaning is a service that is often forgotten in a cleaning schedule and is an important part of keeping your office looking clean, especially this time of year when the sun is flooding in.

These day’s with environmental and industrial conditions being as complex as they are, windows are becoming dirtier, faster.

It is essential that windows are cleaned regularly, but most definately a good yearly clean.  The recommendation would be with most commercial properties is that a window cleaning scheule is put in place for a quarterly clean.  However, properties that are on main roads or in a high traffic or industrial area, a monthly clean would be the recommendation.

anyone can wash a window with soap and water and that will most definately get the job done, but on a professional level, it is more that just washing the glass, as window frames, ledges and surrounding areas will be cleaned in the process.

After it rains, minerals can attach to the glass, including limestone, brick dust or cement.  This can cause staining of the glass over a period of time if not cleaned off.  Spinkler systems near to a building can also make the glass stain if the glass is not cleaned regularly as this water will not be pure, but will contain calcium, salt or other minerals in the mains water supply.

Also, with the introduction of Reach & Wash purified water systems, that our window cleaner contractors use, the water is so pure that it absorbs the dirt, the brush is used to agitate the dirt and then is rinsed with oure water.  The glass is left perfectly clean, since there is nothing in the water to make spots on the glass.
